By Scott Harris, Car 43

Welcome to the "Silver City", Meriden CT and the fire department which serves the same. Meriden is geographically located in the center of the state, midway between Hartford and New Haven along the I-91 corridor. City boundries cover 23.6 square miles and approximately 58,000 residents call Meriden home.

The fire department is currently led by Chief William Dunn. Second in command to Chief Dunn is Deputy Chief Clinton Ross. Both chiefs have worked their way up through the ranks in Meriden. The 89 member fire department staffs 5 engine companies and 1 ladder company out of 5 firehouses. The suppression force of 4 groups work a 10 hour day (0730-1730), 24 hours off, a 14 hour night (1730-0730), 24 hours off, a 10 hour day, 24 hours off, a 14 hour night and 72 hours off. Each group is lead by an assistant chief who is designated as Car 3 on the radio. All members excluding the chief and deputy chief are represented by The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 1148. The city also has one volunteer station, known as the South Meriden Fire Department, which provides fire protection to a 3 square mile area in the southwest corner of the city.

The City of Meriden recently combined police and fire dispatching into a centralized 911 Center located at police headquarters at 50 West Main St. The center is directed by Captain William Leibe. The fire department responded to 7562 incidents in 1997. The city utilizes a "type B" Gamewell telegraph system with approximately 230 street and master boxes still in service.

The fire department is the designated first responder for EMS in the city. All members recently completed EMT-D training and all engine companies presently carry Automatic External Defibrillators (AED). The closest engine company is dispatched for EMS calls as well as Hunters Ambulance, a privately owned company contracted to provide paramedic and BLS service to the city. Hunters ambulance also provides the transportation to the hospital with firefighters riding along to assist on many occasions.
